I decided today I would play newgrounds.com's top 5 Art Game titles today and then share my experience. So without further a due.

First: Devotion
This game seemed like a fun and simple platformer, it uses the standard art house game minimalist graphics and is a medium-level platformer. However the game is lacking... polish maybe? About two minutes in I jumped off a cliff (which the game lead me to do) and the ended up on this screen.
after moving around the screen as far as I could in every direction I went to get myself a soda and orange. I took my time (about 5 minutes) and came to see myself stuck on the same screen. Maybe I missed something but I'm just not that patient anymore. So that was that (Hit the jump for Don't look back, Gretel and Hansel, and more).
Second: Don't Look Back
This game is short, challenging, and touching. There were a couple screens that made me want to pull out my hair, but I appreciate a couple hard moments in a game as long as they're not impossible. This game was well worth the 10-15 minutes it took me to beat it.
Third: The Infinite Ocean
I will level with you, this game came out of the gate as a grey scale "escape the room". I hate ETR games, I gave this game about one minute before I realized how very un-entertained I was, and moved on.
you said it not me. |
Fourth: Gretel and Hansel Part 2
This is the only game of the set that I am going to play after this post. The others were either short or not what I would call fun. This game has some beautiful animation and dark silly death "gags". Most point adventures you find online will just give you a lame message if you try to do something you're not allowed to do yet. Gretel and Hansel awards you with a over the top violent/ridiculous death scene that makes you curse the game but also curious to see how else you can maim your poor protagonist.
Fifth: Color My World
So here is my caveat to CMW, in between the top 5 I was trying out random "Art Games" and I found a trend...

Art Games
are all
incredibly
depressing.
I did not play Colour My World for long, I was getting exhausted by the amount of grayscale (or monochromatic) scenery and depressing quotes these games were offering me. I understand I was adding colour to a black and white existence but then I started hitting the in game signs.
That was the straw that broke the camel's (my) back. I went to the Google store and played something a little more upbeat.
Till the next post.
