Tools of the Trade: Research for Fun and Savings (Profit?)

So, as was shown before, the jaded man-child that is theperrysaurus typecasts himself pretty hard.

Exhibit A (the only one that matters):

Gaming Necromancy: Yu-Gi-Oh Dungeon Dice Monsters

So I ended up at the gaming store around home (it's called Wilkies' Wonderful World, it recently relocated closer to Lunenburg). While looking for sleeves I managed to find something quite surprising. Most people will scoff, but I assure you this one item is surprisingly good for where it comes from. This is the item in question:

Reviewed!: Nujabes

Yes, this is a far cry from what I normally do, but man when it links up for the site content I`ll be happy (it does in the end).

So, here goes:

Reviewed: Quarriors

So, I've decided to do something newer this time around (gasp!), and went with a recent impulse buy that worked out pretty well.

Reviewed: Quarriors! (yes the ! Is in the title).

I have proof.

Just because they said it wasn't likely...

So a brief flashback:

The year was 2006 (maybe 2007, those two years kind of blur together, just like the last three sort of do), and I was at school in New Brunswick at Mount Allison University. I had been picking up games and comics on whims, much like i'm wont to do now. One of the local movie rental places had been a comic shop previously, and the new owners kept it going although at a reduced level (makes sense really, it's a small town, and Moncton is basically next door). Perusing one day I came across this.

the cover was so...... foreboding..... haunting....... ok I'm not a goth kid so I don't know where to go from there.

Out and About: The First! Monster Comic Lounge

The First entry in out and about!

I warn you now there's no rhyme or reason to the order of this, i just went with one out of a proverbial hat really. I decided to go today (that is, the 26th), just to get out of the house moreless. Two birds with one......
I'm sorry, low fruit

JeramyE, Brad Neely, and Me.

So Jer, (whom I happen to live with), created this false idea in my head. He keeps talking about this Brad Neely guy that has a bunch of cartoons on youtube like everyone knows about him.
The new face of comedy, according to Jer.

Summoner Wars: Reviewed!

Again, another attempt at this thing. The problem with writing this one isn't so much a format issue, but wanting to talk about things that aren't the game per se (you'll see). But here it goes.

Game: Summoner Wars by Plaid Hat Games

Again this one has been out a little while, but just recently got a complete re-release. It`s impressive as the original starters (two decks each, paper mat) got replaced by this beast:

Bask in the glory, fools
Suddenly the number of factions (decks) in the starter tripled, you get an actual board (was separate), dice and wound tokens. Makes the starter doubling in price not so bad really.

More after the jump.

Out and About: Series Preamble

Ok, here's the deal:

Game reviews will happen more, but man I need to figure out how to write those that I like them (still kryptonite). There's a fundamental flaw in me writing them at the moment, as I feel I'm getting ahead of myself when I do.

This is also known as quick-draw syndrome (they call me... the flash).
Stock self-depreciation joke 14c go!

So now, I'll be doing a series on the places that I generally used to do.... well, this:

Reviewed!: Cthulu Dice

So I've been trying to write board game reviews but I'm quickly realizing how hard it is to write about something I'm actually happy with (format is a terrible kryptonite it seems). I decided I'll start by going with something small. I guess I have to start talking about something relevant then..... nertz.

Cthulhu Dice by Steve Jackson Games.

Picture unrelated... or is it?

So, This little number has a lot going for it. It is older but has:

a) not been out of print that I'm aware of since it was released and...

b) actually just got revamped in a larger format. So I don't feel so bad writing this because of the re-release.

One step away from the best snowman ever?

The Sad Side of Paper and Dice

If you already know the origins of the Pathfinder RPG system ignore this, I just feel the need to vent.

So, I started hearing about Pathfinder a little while ago for whatever reason. It seems like it might become a big thing around here. Now I have to admit I can suffer from change-o-phobia when it comes to new paper and dice systems. I like to grumble away and nit pick about this and that, but I know it wouldn't happen with Pathfinder. In fact most people who like DnD could buy this game blind and be into it.

We've reached a depressing point in gaming because of this.

It's not because it's a well crafted, interesting and fun RPG, no no no that would be too hard. The lead designer openly admits what you're playing in the first two paragraphs of the book.
You're playing DnD 3.5.... freshened up a bit under a new name.
Think about the implications of that for a minute. I'll wait...

Hal-Con: Conor meets Steve Jackson!

So Hal-Con came and went. It was a lot of fun for the day I went. There were two moments that stood out though, for the sheer physical pain that they caused me. Thus we have!
My two most failing encounters at Hal-Con:

First thing in the morning, we had just gotten in the building and had done a circuit of the vendor gallery (it was actually the vendor room but gallery sounds much more interesting to me), and had checked out where the workshop rooms etc were. On our way out to eat and to pick up our other two compatriots for the event, I hear Tylor say to me "go stand by the lost in space robot so I can get a picture". My heart sinks at this comment, and all I can manage is a "I hate you so much right now". This was the "lost in space robot" in question:

Now, I'm not even a doctor who fan, in fact I'm close to being the opposite. That being said I still know my goddamn sci fi robots. Thankfully only a few people were around for that..... episode.

Now, onto the actual one where I embarrass myself. I don't even need help sometimes!
