Out and About: Gelatinous Dudes' Game Day

It was all a trick!

Not only did we manage to show for Game Day in force, but it was pretty damn enjoyable.

For some reason, I've never been able to shake that preconception that these kinds of things are filled with awkward, greasy kids who have failed to shower successfully for a minimum of 1 year. I'm always wrong. Additionally, I'm hesitant to fork out money for something I can do with my friends in my own living room. But alas; the guys a gals at Gelatinous Dude's Game Day were friendly, socially adept and a lot of fun to hang around with (not to mention quite pleasantly clean).

Hit the jump for the tale of our shenanigans!

Game 1
When we got there, many a game were already on the go. We're habitual late-comers. Don't expect us to be on time for your birthday, wedding or funeral. It's just not our style. Since everyone else was mid-game, we eyed an empty table in a lonely little corner and headed to the remaining games collection.

At this point in the day there didn't seem to be much left. There were at least 25 other people already there playing 8-10 games between them (maybe more). I tend to limit my selection subconsciously with these kinds of things so I think I only saw the two or three games I was familiar with.

Oh Perrysaurus, how you defy all capture!

Luckily I didn't end up choosing the game. Unluckily, the rule-book was missing and when the very friendly and well-spoken Gelatinous Dude tried to explain the relatively complicated rules we abandoned all hope almost immediately and reverted to a known standard: Frag (an unexciting attempt at FPS in board-game form). Double luckily we were joined by another late-comer; a friendly-type fellow with infectious energy who had never played the game before. And the experience was redeemed.

Game 2
This was a group game, clearly designed for party scenarios. It was easily the funnest version of  Mafia I've ever played, although my experience has been limited to school yard versions of "Murderer". With 18 people plus a narrator we then "met" 90% of the gamers left in the room at that point.

I was out pretty quickly. Granted, I repeatedly tried to convince everyone that I was a werewolf. Maybe I came on a little too strong. I got lynched about 3 rounds in. I wasn't a werewolf, but I guess that doesn't really mean anything when you're dead by the hands of your most loyal villager friends. Whoops. . .

Door Prizes
I honestly didn't expect this and I quickly realized that door prizes in the form of board games are awesome if you OR your friends end up getting one. We got two.

Allow me to demonstrate this cost-benefit analysis using simple mathematical formulae:

Solve for x:

($35 in door prize value) / (($5 entry) x (4 attendees)) = X

Ok. I give up.
To the calculator; the ultimate brain of science!

X = Win! 1.75

All said and done, I'll be making sure I get there earlier next time. I think maximizing game selection potential and social interaction with like-minded fun-lovers is key here and boy, does the time fly.

"You're going to put your eye out with that!"
