DCU Online: First Impression, Character Creation is Hard.

I finally downloaded DCU with my weak rural internet. I have spent probably four hours with DCU but I still haven't officially made it to the gameplay yet. I decided I wanted to make a post about the character creation screen (definetly the most important part of this game).

It's interesting to me that unlike other mmorpg's, in superhero games your character doesn't change its appearance past the starting screen. I guess it would suck attempting to find a Batman Mask of the Eagle so you have the look and stats you want.

BEHOLD! The price of power.
Hit the jump for ranting, raving, and my final character choices.

First of all the character creation UI sucks. It really sucks. The UI is clunky, they alphabetize the names of all the options (which is fine) but still opt to put the "wear nothing option" in the middle of the options, not the top or bottom. Your default costume is also in the lower-mid area of all your options, so you have to scroll to the top or the bottom to start your list. Also there is no clear costume or random costume button. They have masks (A LOT of masks) but they only have a few different faces, all of which are linked entirely to your skin. Maybe they thought that most people would prefer masks, but this is some serious malarky.

They also have an inspired by feature. This is for the people who love comic books but have no imagination.
You know who you are.
I don't have too much to say about the inspired features, but I did want to comment on a few things. One translations of opposite gender characters don't really work. Take for example "Wonder Man."
Pictured above; Wonder Man from DCU, and Wonder Man from my nightmares (Still better than Marvel's Version).

The Batman rip-off looks kinda like a luchador and girl Joker well she's pretty much the e-girl of my dreams.

I also have a gripe with all of these games. Why do all the bodies have to be super muscled? Why can't I make Tim Burton or Chris Farley man?
You will believe a man can fly.
I'd love to make a giant fat hero. The comics do it. I just like to make a character that doesn't have muscles on their muscles. While we're on this vein of thought I have to mention the women's models. Let's just pull this off like a band aid, women's bodies+mmorpg+comic books =
Aren't you glad we got that out of the way?
One last thing on that note...
That's right, crime fighting heels are in this year.
It's good to see character creation screens are still in the dark ages when it comes to sexism. Otherwise I'm not going to spoil too much about the making heroes (or villains) with DCU, (it is free to play afterall). So I have one more thing to mention. Call this a hunch, call me paranoid, call me crazy if you like, but I think the game designer for DCU might be a furry sympathizer.
 Just call it a hunch.

.
I was tempted to make a giant cat man and name him Furry Justice, but I decided that's a territory that I don't want to associate myself with.
I'm more of a beau than a bear anyway.
After about 3 hours of playing with different stuff I created two characters (the maximum a free account will allow). Both are tanks and heroes.
My first character is a secret Mystical Nazi experiment that was not implemented during the reign of the Third Reich. The experiment was to harness the power of ancient Egyptian magics and use them against the Allies. The project created a super powerful Mummy soldier. However it was too late for the Axis so he's been locked away for some time. After awakening to the new world the Nazi creation swore off the ways of his creators and fights for justice. I give you, Herr Mummy.
He keeps crime under wraps.
The other character is a Japanese School girl with swords named Tentacle Slayer. I just wanted to make a japanese school girl named Tentacle Slayer.
Yeah I went there.
I'm going to pilot one of these characters to level 10 and share my experience back here on MGD. I'm leaning towards the mummy, because after character creation I feel like if I go with TS I might end up being pestered by too many lonely middle aged men. But of course it could be worse, it's not like the game would attract the attention of furries and other e-sex deviants.
 ...then again.

Till the next post.
